About

Upper Horfield Somali School (UHSS) has been developed to respond to demand from Somali parents in Horfield for support with their children’s education, and a space for community activities. The project is being developed and deilvered by Elays Development Network (EDN), and supported by Upper Horfield Community Trust (UHCT) and Bristol Community Housing Foundation (BCHF).

The intervention is focused on closing the achievement gap and will deliver against the following targets for education:

  • Raise attainment in all key stages and in relations to underperforming groups;  
  • Improve the positive engagement of children, young people and their families;
  • and  Improve the economic well-being of children and young people.

The aims of the project are to:

      Enable Somali pupils improve attainment in all key stages;

      Enable children and young people develop full personal potential;

      Empower children and young people maintain cultural identity and encourage self-esteem and pride; and

      Enable parents to actively involve with their child’s education and school activities.
